Governor McGreevey Announces Groundbreaking of New Elementary School Addition in Asbury Park

Asbury Park, NJ (May 23, 2003) - Governor James E. McGreevey today announced the groundbreaking for a new addition to expand the Bradley Elementary School in Asbury Park. The groundbreaking is the result of an $8 million dollar investment from New Jersey's School Construction Program, and will support the creation of new classrooms to accommodate 450 children in grades Kindergarten through Fifth.

"Our efforts in literacy and teacher preparation can only succeed if children are being educated in safe, modern classrooms," said McGreevey. "In these classrooms, children will learn computer skills that prepare them for the future, as well as the magic of art and music, and the wonder of science. Investing in school construction provides our children with the tools they need to succeed, laying the foundation for the future success of our towns, our counties and ultimately, our entire state."

The project involves the construction of a new 32,700 square foot facility, for new classrooms, a science room, a new gymnasium, an art room and a music room. Renovations will also take place to approximately 47,000 square feet of existing space to add air conditioning throughout the building and provide a new sprinkler system. The project will be done in three phases starting at the beginning of June 2003 and concluding by the end of December 2004.

"The Bradley Elementary School project is an example of the progress made in the implementation of the historic school construction initiative," said Alfred McNeill, CEO of the New Jersey School Construction Corporation. "This new addition and the renovations are some of the first to hundreds of schools that will be built under the educational facilities law," McNeill added.

Under the Educational Facilities and Construction Act, the New Jersey School Construction Corporation is responsible for the construction and financing for school construction in the state's 30 special needs Abbott districts, following approval by the Department of Education.

The New Jersey School Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, was created six months ago by Governor McGreevey to streamline the building of school facilities, to create greater efficiency in procurement and project management, increase district involvement in project planning and the implementation of efficient and innovative school designs.
