State
Fully Funded $22.4 Million Project in Perth Amboy
Perth Amboy, NJ (October 1, 2003) - The New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) marked the construction of a new elementary school in the City of Perth Amboy with a groundbreaking ceremony today attended by educators, state, county and city officials, as well as students, parents and supporters.
The State is fully funding the $22.4 million project to provide 21st century educational facilities for over 500 students in Kindergarten through 4th grade in the Middlesex County school district. The new, 111,000-square-foot school facility will include 22 classrooms, 14 basic skills rooms, three special education rooms, six Kindergarten and three pre-Kindergarten rooms, a state-of-the-art media center, music room, art room, gymnasium, cafetorium and playground. The project, which ultimately will replace the existing Perth Amboy School #10 on Stockton Street, is slated for completion in 2005.
This project is part of the State's $8.6 billion school construction program that is helping to revitalize the community, bringing jobs and targeted growth to the area.
"This new construction in Perth Amboy represents New Jersey's continued commitment to our children. We are living up to our most important obligation by providing 21st century facilities to ensure that every child has the opportunity to get the education they deserve and the skills necessary to start school," said Governor McGreevey.
"The state is committed to improving school facilities for New Jersey students in a cost-effective, streamlined and efficient manner. School buildings must be designed to provide access to modern technology and a thoughtful environment which is conducive to student achievement," he added.
Superintendent of Schools John M. Rodecker stated, "The Board of Education has been waiting to resume its building program since the Wilentz School opened in 1999. Our school community and the staff, students and parents of School 10 - The 21st Century School - eagerly anticipate the opening day of the newest, state-of-the-art elementary school for the children of the City of Perth Amboy."
Under the Educational Facilities Construction and Financing Act, the SCC is responsible for school projects throughout the State. The program is the largest public construction program ever undertaken by the State of New Jersey and represents one of the largest programs of its type ever undertaken in the nation.
