Awards $167 Million in School Projects

OKs Work in Trenton, Long Branch, Neptune & Plainfield
Trenton, NJ (December
2, 2003) - The New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation has awarded
approximately $167 million in construction contracts for three new schools
in the City of Trenton along with new educational facilities in Long
Branch, Neptune and Plainfield. The action was taken by the SCC Board
of Directors at its November 26th meeting.
The newly approved
projects are being fully funded and managed by the SCC as part of the
$8.6 billion school construction program initiated by Governor McGreevey
that is helping to revitalize the community, bringing jobs and targeted
growth to the area.
The new contracts
awarded by the SCC include (by School District, School, Square Footage,
Student Occupancy, Contract Award Value and winning qualified bidder):
Trenton:
Martin Luther King/Jefferson Elementary School; 119,825 square feet;
$25,839,000; 800 students; Turner Construction Company.
Trenton:
Joyce Kilmer Elementary School; 119,882 square feet; 747 students; $20,498,000;
Epic Management, Inc.
Trenton:
New Christopher Columbus Elementary School; 73,681 square feet; 260
students; $14,452,000; Turner Construction Company.
Long Branch:
New Long Branch High School; 300,000 square feet; 1,608 students; $60,197,000;
Hunt Construction Group, Inc.
Neptune:
New Midtown Community School; 149,000 square feet; 750 students; $35,999,500;
Turner Construction Company.
Plainfield:
Clinton Elementary School; 32,186 square feet; 324 students; $10,373,000;
324 students; Ernest Block & Sons, Inc.
"Our school construction
initiative - to provide safe, healthy and high quality school facilities
- is the largest public building program ever undertaken by the State
and one of the largest programs of its type ever undertaken in the nation,"
said John F. Spencer, the new CEO of SCC. He noted that projected new
SCC construction starts for 2004 include 88 school projects totaling
$1.4 billion.
The latest round
of new construction contracts is in keeping with Spencer's stated goal
of making the SCC "the premier agency that contractors and professionals
will want to work for again and again. We must establish a working relationship
that is firm but fair."
