SCC Tours 2 New Middle Schools in Hudson County
Union City and West New York Facilities to Open in September 2004
Hudson County , NJ (May 27, 2004) - Two new middle school projects that are nearing completion in Union City and West New York were toured by John F. Spencer, CEO of New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC), SCC design and construction representatives and local school district officials. Both facilities – the Jose Marti Middle School in Union, and the West New York Middle School in West New York – are due to open in September 2004. SCC is fully funding and managing these projects through New Jersey’s unprecedented $8.6 billion school construction program.
Jose Marti Middle School is the first facility of its type in Union City built to incorporate community-oriented features designed by the architect – with community input – to serve the entire neighborhood. The school will not only meet the educational needs of 6th, 7th and 8th graders, but includes a library for residents and a health center for 11,000 students in the community. The project entails construction of a new 132,000-square-foot facility to accommodate up to 775 students. It features a jointly constructed public library and school library within one of its buildings. The libraries will be built adjacent to one another, providing separate entrances and exits for dual use by students and community residents on nights and weekends. The new school also features 27 classrooms, 11 special education or small group learning classrooms, 6 science and technology labs, music rooms (including practice rooms), a cafetorium with a full-size stage, a full-size gymnasium suite, a library/media center, health center, computer lab, applied technology lab, interior courtyard, and a football/soccer field and softball field.
New West New York Middle School will serve 1,000 students in 7th and 8th grades to relieve overcrowding in the school district. Currently, the district’s 6 elementary schools serve Kindergarten through 8th grades. The project involves the construction of a new 173,000-square-foot facility, as well as renovations to an adjacent existing 18,000-square-foot facility. The new school includes 32 new classrooms, 20 special education/ small group learning classrooms, 11 science and technology labs, three music rooms (including practice rooms), two art rooms, a 600-seat auditorium (with stage for full productions), a full service cafeteria, a 12,000-square-foot gymnasium suite, an interactive media center, and one family skills lab/classroom.
