Millville Residents Attend NJSCC Community Forum
Status of $54 Million in Local School Projects Discussed
Millville, NJ (June 7, 2004) - Residents and parents from the Millville school district attended a Community Forum Monday night jointly sponsored by the New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) and Millville Board of Education. The public forum - one in a series of such community gatherings planned by SCC around the state - provided a progress report on school construction and renovation projects in Millville.
“Governor McGreevey has asked SCC to remain committed to keeping communities informed of our plans and progress on school construction projects,” said John F. Spencer, SCC Chief Executive Officer. “This Forum was the first of many we will be hosting jointly with local school districts and community groups to ensure neighborhoods are kept abreast of school construction progress and to help us stay in touch with the communities we’re here to serve.”
The forum, held at the Millville Board of Education, featured discussion on various SCC projects in the city that will ultimately total more than $54 million when completed. To date, more than $42 million in SCC funding has been committed to projects in Millville.
“We’re pleased SCC took the time to join us in sharing project status with our parents and residents,” said Millville Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Larry Miller. “The Forum gave parents some much-anticipated information on projects in their neighborhoods and, I believe, provided SCC staff with invaluable insight that will only help improve the relationship between the district and the Schools Construction Corporation.”
Governor McGreevey initiated SCC in July 2002 to streamline the building of much-needed quality schools statewide, saying at that time, “These projects represent New Jersey’s continued commitment to our children. Working together, we are living up to our most important obligation by providing 21st century schools to ensure every child has the opportunity to get the education they deserve and skills necessary to succeed.”
SCC is responsible for school projects throughout the New Jersey. The $8.6 billion program is the largest public construction program ever undertaken by New Jersey and represents one of the largest programs of its type ever undertaken in the nation.
