SCC, Paterson Educators Break Ground For New International High School

Paterson, NJ (September 26, 2006) - Paterson School District and New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC) officials held a groundbreaking today to mark the start of construction for International High School, which will ease overcrowding and enhance academic achievement for more than 520 students from 9th through 12th grades

The ceremony was attended by students, parents, residents and community leaders at the construction site on Grand Street once occupied by a housing project.

Scott Weiner, CEO of SCC
"This is a great day for our Paterson youth! We are truly an international community, and so it is fitting and appropriate to meet the needs of those students who wish to pursue international careers. We will take pride in providing an academic environment that fosters excellence and a brighter future," said State District Superintendent Michael E. Glascoe, Ed. D.

Scott Weiner, Transitional CEO of SCC, stated, "This is the latest significant step for the students and community of Paterson, and is an example of the positive collaboration among the district, the SCC and Department of Education." He noted the SCC already has opened the new Roberto Clemente Elementary School and P.A.N.T.H.E.R Academy in Paterson, and has rehabilitated many more schools through health and safety projects.

The four-story, 113,000-square-foot International High School will include 16 general classrooms, a computer-aided design (CAD) room, four science labs, a technology lab, a small group instruction room, a home economics room, language labs, art rooms, choral and instrumental music rooms, a gym, an auditorium, a cafeteria and a kitchen. It also will include a media center/library that will be accessible to the community as well as students.

The high school curriculum, modeled after a United Nations educational program, will focus on preparing students for international careers. The curriculum will draw on the rich cultural diversity found in Paterson's population. It will cover the core curriculum content standards and place an added emphasis on topics and skills related to international relations, such as the peaceful settlement of differences, global awareness, health, technology and the environment, and respect for and celebration of equality and diversity.

The school was designed by L+C. Terminal Construction Corporation is the general contractor for the construction. Jacobs Facilities is managing the project for the SCC.
