Trenton, NJ (August 15, 2007)– The New Jersey Schools Development Authority ( SDA) has awarded a $33.6 million construction contract to Delric Construction Co. for the new Speedway Elementary School in Newark to provide 21st century educational opportunities for 690 students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grades.
The new school will help ease district overcrowding and provide much-needed early childhood educational programs for 3- and 4-year-old children. It will replace the present Speedway Elementary School, which will continue to house students during construction of the new school. The old school will be demolished when the new facility is complete.
The new Speedway Elementary School will be located on South Orange Avenue just west of the Garden State Parkway and across from Vailsburg Park. Classrooms in the new 121,373-square-foot, three-story facility will be in an academic wing farthest from South Orange Avenue. The school will have an auditorium, cafeteria, gymnasium and library/media center that will serve as educational and community resources.
The construction contract was awarded to Delric Construction Co. at the SDA’s August 15 meeting. Fletcher Thompson Inc. is the design firm for the new school. PB+3D/I is managing the project for the SDA.
The SDA has opened one new school in the district – Science Park High School. Two more are under way – Central High School and First Avenue Elementary School.
The organization has completed 32 new schools and 25 major additions/renovations and nearly 400 health, safety and other projects. Currently, 28 projects are under construction.
