Hoboken, NJ (October 2, 2007) – New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) representatives today joined Hoboken School District educators, students, officials and residents at a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the major renovations at Salvatore A. Calabro Elementary School. It is the first major SDA project to be completed in Hoboken.
The newly expanded and renovated facility provides 21st century educational opportunities for 131 students in pre-kindergarten through 4th grade. It enhances academic achievement, provides preschool educational programs and helps alleviate overcrowding in the Hoboken district.
| Scott Weiner, CEO of the SDA, said, "We're proud to be a part of this transformation of an insufficient facility, which had classrooms separated by movable partitions, into one with fixed classrooms, education-specific spaces and state-of-the-art technology. This benefits students and faculty alike, and underscores the successful collaboration between the SDA and the district."
District Superintendent Jack Raslowsky stated, "It is a fabulous building on every level – from the science, art and music areas, the media center and home-rooms, to the lighting, equipment and materials. It's a reminder that as much as a great education needs positive interaction between teachers and students, it also requires great spaces that allow teachers and students to do great work. The result is a testament to the terrific cooperation between the district and the SDA, and a model for projects we hope to accomplish working together in the future."
The renovations of the 33,210-square-foot, three-story school resulted in nine fixed classrooms, computer rooms, a library/media center, art/music room and stage, a cafetorium, gymnasium and administrative offices. Construction was performed in a single phase extending into the school year. Students displaced by the construction were shifted to swing space. In addition to the renovations, other work included mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades.

The renovation project was designed by URS Architects/Engineers, Inc. and built by Hall Building Corporation. Bovis Lend Lease managed the project for the SDA.
The Calabro School is among 22 new and renovated schools managed by the SDA that opened last month, benefiting 13,500 students statewide. It is the largest slate of major school projects opened in a single fall since the school construction program’s inception. Overall, the SDA has completed 41 schools and 28 major renovations and additions, and nearly 400 health, safety and other projects in Abbott districts. An additional 21 are under construction.
