Training Program-Women & Minorities

Construction Trades Training Program for Women and Minorities (CTTP-WM)

The CTTP is a free preparatory outreach and training program for Abbott district residents interested in the construction industry. The program is funded, overseen and evaluated by the SDA and administered by the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD). LWD contracts with organizations within the NJ community to implement the program to women and minorities. Participants receive training to upgrade their math and reading skills, and to gain familiarity with the construction industry and the NJ building trades unions. At the end of the program “graduates” are prepared to compete for union apprenticeships within the NJ Building and Construction Trades Council.

April 2008 marks the CTTP’s sixth year of implementation. We have made a number of changes in the program based on lessons learned and changing industry needs. Some of the key changes include:

  • Implementation on a countywide basis in line with union structure
  • Setting more efficient budgets allowing for more grants to rollout
  • Setting more realistic goals and expanding positive outcomes allowing more grants to be successful
  • Establishing a set number of training hours to mimic apprenticeship requirements
  • Limiting number of training cycles providing for more comprehensive learning
